  • Birth Defects

Two healthy parents can have a baby with birth defects even if they have no risk factors or health problems. Pregnant women who do everything in their power to have a healthy pregnancy may still have a child with a birth defect. The March of Dimes reports that the cause of nearly 60% of birth defects is unknown. The remaining percent of birth defects is thought to be caused by genetic or environmental factors – or both.

Every person has about 35,000 genes per cell. These genes determine things such as the color of a person’s eyes, their hair color and height and so on. One faulty gene can cause a baby to be born with a birth defect. A baby inherits his chromosomes — and the genes they contain — from his parents. A baby will have one pair of chromosomes from his father and one pair from his mother. A child can be born with a birth defect even if only one half of his chromosomes have a defect or a disease. This is known as dominant inheritance. Birth defects that are sometimes caused by dominant inheritance include dwarfism and Marfan syndrome.

Recessive inheritance is when the baby has inherited a faulty gene for the same condition or disease from both parents. Recessive inheritance can include conditions such as cystic fibrosis or Tay-Sachs.

Other genetic factors that can lead to birth defects are those which are X-linked. This means a male baby has received a faulty gene from their mothers. The structure or number of chromosomes a baby inherits can also cause birth defects. Down syndrome is a birth defect that is caused by chromosome problems.

There are steps that can be taken to make sure a baby does not have birth defects. However, there is no way to guarantee that a baby will be born without birth defects – even if there is no family history of birth defects.

  • Birth Crowning

Once labor sets in for a pregnant woman, it is an indication that the end of the pregnancy is near. However, labor itself has various stages with the second stage being the more intensive and painful besides requiring more effort. This is when the baby moves into the birth canal and every instinct urges the woman to keep pushing. At this time it is best to follow the doctor’s or midwife’s instructions on when and how to push. This stage of labor takes at least a couple of hours for first-timers and it may be slightly shorter for women who have given birth previously.

The contractions and the pushing move the baby along the birth canal and soon the baby’s head begins to peep out through the vaginal opening. This is the birth crowning. As this takes place the mother is likely to experience a burning sensation. However, this will pass in a few moments and then the major part of the laboring is over. As the birth crowning occurs the doctor is also able to determine if the umbilical cord is wrapped around the baby’s neck or if there is any other such obstruction.

Remember to ease up on the pushing once the birth crowning occurs for otherwise, you are likely to end up tearing your vagina and this is something you don’t want to do to yourself. Taking a few deep breaths can help you relax your body and stop pushing till the contractions do their job and ease out the baby after birth crowning. Sometimes, the doctor might have to use forceps or some other means of assistance if the baby gets stuck in the birth canal and has to be manually taken out. Then the baby and mother are all cleaned up and allowed to rest after all their hard work.

  • Birth Control Questions

    END MORNING SICKNESS!!
    For a Happy Pregnancy

If you have never taken oral contraceptives before, you many have many birth control questions. One of the first birth control questions you may have is exactly how to birth control pills work. Most contain artificial estrogen that mimics the hormones of your body. They increase the levels of hormones in your body, making your body adjust. These extra hormones thicken the cervical mucus causing an uninviting environment for sperm, thus preventing pregnancy. Physicians usually advise you to take your birth control pills at the same time each day.

One of the most frequently asked birth control questions if “I forgot to take my pill! What do I do?” If you have forgotten to take your birth control pill, take it as soon as you remember, then take the next pill at the normal time. The risk of pregnancy is only slightly increased, but you may want to use another form of birth control as a back up for the next week. If you have forgotten to take the pill for two days, you should take them as soon as you remember, but use an alternative form of birth control for the rest of the month. Missing more than three pills may mean you need to stop taking the rest of the pack for the month, but you will need to consult your physician or nurse to make sure.

Some birth control questions concern stopping the usage of oral contraceptives. Many women who have taken oral contraceptives for years may decide they want to get pregnant. How long does it take for your body to return to normal? This varies from woman to woman, but most women should wait until they have had at least two normal menstrual cycles before trying to conceive. This can range anywhere from three months to a year as some women go through a period where they are infertile after they stop taking birth control pills.

If you have any additional birth control questions, don’t hesitate to contact your physician at any time.

  • Birth Control Pills

There are many different forms of birth control. Each form should be evaluated for its benefits and its risks. Birth control pills are the choice that many women make to prevent pregnancy. It is important to understand that while birth control pills can prevent pregnancy they do not prevent you from contracting a sexually transmitted disease. You should still consider using condoms to protect yourself from sexually transmitted diseases.

Birth control pills require a bit more work than other forms of birth control. You will need to have a prescription to get birth control pills. There are actually two different types of birth control pills to choose from: mini-pills and combined oral contraceptives.

Mini-pills only contain progestin. These pills work by thickening cervical mucus which keeps sperm from getting to the egg. They may also work to keep the ovaries from releasing eggs at all. Mini-pills should be taken every day to be effective.

Combined oral contraceptives have two hormones in them: progestin and estrogen. These hormones keep the ovaries from producing eggs. Combined oral contraceptives should be taken every day to be effective. It is thought that the combined oral contraceptives are more effective than the mini-pills.

Other forms of birth control include injections, implants, IUDs, Sterilization, condoms, Norplant and diaphragms with spermicides. However, the only true form of birth control is abstinence. You should talk with your doctor about the different forms of birth control that are available so that a suitable match can be made for you. Every person is unique and each form of birth control has its own effectiveness.

Make sure the form of birth control that you have chosen will meet your needs. Things that you should consider before deciding which form of birth control you will choose should include your age, sexual lifestyle, family history and family planning.

  • Birth Control Pill

    END MORNING SICKNESS!!
    For a Happy Pregnancy

The birth control pill is one of the most popular and most effective forms of contraception, and is relatively easy to take, but requires constant vigilance, since a woman must take a pill every day at about the same time. Missing even one dose, especially for women who are taking the progesterone pill, means a significant risk of pregnancy. Therefore, a woman should always keep her pills with her at all times in her purse, and in case her birth control pill case is lost, she needs to have it replaced as soon as possible.

The most commonly used birth control pill contains a combination of progesterone and estrogen hormones. The birth control pill works by leading the body to “think” it is pregnant by preventing ovulation and thickening the lining of the uterus. The birth control pill comes in 21 day and 28 day packs, and each pill is assigned to a certain day. This is to ensure that she never misses a day.

The birth control pill is not 100% foolproof, and it is estimated that 5 to 8 pregnancies occur for every 100 women who are taking the pill. However, these pregnancies can be the result of human error, such as problems with drug interactions. Care must be taken even when using herbal remedies, since it has been shown that some medicines and herbs such as S. John’s Wort can interfere with the effectiveness of the birth control pill.

There can be side effects to using the birth control pill, and it seems that the positive effects balance out the negative. While a woman might experience unpredictable and irregular menstrual bleeding, headaches, dizzy spells, moodiness, she also reduces the severity of her periods and can lessen acne breakouts with the birth control pill. There have been cases of blood clots that have been blamed on the pill, but these are very rare among women under 35 who do not smoke.

  • Birth Control Options

Both male and female birth control options are available in plenty and it is up to the individual to decide what he or she would prefer to utilize. There are a few factors you need to consider before you can pinpoint one of the birth control options as the best for you. These include your feelings about planning for sex, how comfortable you are with having a foreign object inserted into your body as a contraceptive device, effectiveness of the method in preventing pregnancy, and the frequency of sex amongst others. In the US, the birth control pill is the most popular contraceptive followed by tubal sterilization and the male condom.

Other available birth control options are vasectomy, injectable contraception, withdrawal method, IUD, and the diaphragm besides abstinence. If you are someone who is looking for temporary birth control and intend to have children in the future, then tubal sterilization and vasectomy are not ideal solutions for you. Irrespective of the kind of birth control options you choose, it is essential to remember that most of these are not protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Condoms are one form of birth control that offer the most protection against STDs.

Some of the birth control options can be obtained over the counter while others have to be either prescribed by a doctor or fitted by one. Natural birth control options may require more self control and will tend to be less effective in the long run than other methods. This is because this method revolves around a woman’s cycle which can be quite unpredictable. There are various success rates for each birth control option. Oral contraceptives, vaginal contraceptive ring, hormone implants, hormone shots, IUD and the contraceptive patch have been found to have caused the least number of pregnancies in any given year.

  • Birth Control Methods

With so many types of birth control methods, choosing the right one can be confusing. Each method has its own benefits and drawbacks and the choice comes down to your own personal preference. Conducting research before you go to your appointment is a great idea, but you should also consult with your doctor to ensure that you have all of the facts.

The most classic method of all birth control methods is the birth control pill. However, there are many types of pills as well. There are some birth control pills that will help you fight acne, loose water weight, or even stop your period. The birth control pill is usually cheaper than other types of birth control but you do have to remember to take it everyday.

Other birth control methods include the birth control patch. The birth control patch is similar to a nicotine patch except that it transfers birth control hormones rather than nicotine. The birth control patch is great for people who can’t remember to take the birth control pill. The patch is replaced weekly rather than daily. However, the patch is best used on individuals who are not overweight. If you think you fall into this category, you should check with your doctor to determine whether this is the right choice for you.

Some birth control methods can be inserted into your uterus. These methods, known as IUD’s, allow individuals to forget about birth control all together because they do not require taking or replacing anything. Once it is inserted by a physician you are done. However, there have been some IUD’s in the past that were found to have negative effects on its users. Yet, the modern IUD’s are considered safe.

Other birth control methods do not require a prescription or a physician. These methods include condoms and other over the counter methods such as the sponge. These methods are great for individuals who do not want to see a physician. However, instructions should be followed exactly. If you do not understand the instructions that come with the product, you should consult a pharmacist or physician.

  • Birth Control

    END MORNING SICKNESS!!
    For a Happy Pregnancy

There are plenty of ways to prevent pregnancy. Some people choose abstinence, wherein they do not engage in sexual intercourse. Other people choose to use various methods of birth control. The responsibility of pregnancy prevention is often placed on the woman. For this matter, sexually active women typically visit their doctor and seek a birth control prescription. This might consist of an oral contraceptive, a patch, injection, etc. Before writing a prescription, doctors likely review the patient’s medical history and current medications. Prescription contraceptives are sensitive and can quickly lose their effectiveness.

Unfortunately, many women are unaware of how contraceptives lose effectiveness. If taking certain herbs or antibiotics, it’s best to use a backup method for at least two weeks. Each year, several women combine their birth control with other medications and become pregnant. Although contraceptives are not 100% effective, the science has improved within the past twenty years. If taken properly, the majority of contraceptives such as the pill are over 98% effective. This is great for women who want to prevent pregnancy. Having a baby changes your life. Single parenthood creates further challenges, and children have financial needs.

Aside from prescription medications, there are also non-prescription birth control methods. The sponge and condom are available over-the-counter. While these methods are not as reliable as a prescription, they can prevent pregnancy. These methods are ideal for persons who don’t have a prescription, but plan on engaging in sexual intercourse. Another way to prevent an unwanted pregnancy is the emergency birth control pill. This method has resulted in a lot of controversy. Some argue that the emergency birth control pill is abortion, whereas others feel that it is a safe and responsible method. However, this pill cannot terminate a pregnancy that has occurred. Rather, it prevents pregnancies. Take emergency contraceptives up to 3 days after having unprotected sex.

  • Birth Certificates

Birth certificates are easy to misplace. Maybe the original copy was ruined. Getting a new or updated copy of birth certificates is very easy. In fact, once you complete a simple form, you’ll receive a copy of the certificate within two to four weeks. Birth certificates are needed to enroll in school, apply for a Passport, etc. Persons without a certificate also find it difficult to apply for a driver’s license. The majority of people receive a copy of their original birth certificate shortly after birth. Since these certificates are not used on a regular basis, it’s easy to misplace the document.

The best way to keep up with birth certificates is to place the document in a safe and secure place. Some people file their certificate in a cabinet, while others use a fireproof drawer or cabinet. Whatever storage method chosen, make sure that your original certificate will not be exposed to water or moisture. If the document is damaged and difficult to read, it becomes invalid and you’ll have to requests a new one.

Some people request a second copy of their certificate in the event that the original is lost. To do so, contact the Vital Records Department in the state where you were born. This department will either mail you a request application, or provide the website address to an online application. Before a new certificate is re-issued, you’ll have to provide detail personal information about yourself and parents. This protects against fraudulent activity and ensures the validity of your request. Thoroughly complete the application. If you leave necessary blanks empty, this will delay your request, and it’ll take twice as long to receive a new certificate. Finally, submit a check payable to the state’s Vital Records Department. The certificate application will provide information about fees.

  • Birth Announcements

Are you expecting a new bundle of joy? If so, you might consider announcing the birth of your baby. Birth announcements are typically sent to family and relatives shortly after the birth of a baby. Some people do not send out birth announcements. Rather, they choose to contact friends and relatives individually. This method works. However, if you are looking for a unique way to introduce your baby to loved ones, an official announcement is a good choice. Parents may decide to create their own announcement on the computer, or purchase specialized stationery.

There is a basic etiquette to birth announcements. For starters, announcements are not customarily sent to everyone. Often times, parents will contact friends and family that live nearby with the telephone, and then mail an announcement to persons who live out-of-state. Because a lot of people enjoy sharing in the excitement of a new baby, there is nothing wrong with sending an announcement to several people. The best time to send an announcement is shortly after the birth. If the sex of the baby is known, it’s proper to send birth announcements prior to the birth – perhaps a week before the schedule due date.

Birth announcements can include a variety of information. In many cases, announcements are kept simple. Start the announcement with a short introductory sentence. This line might read, “We welcome with love”¦,” or “Welcome the newest member of our family.”

Incorporating a poem on the announcement adds a unique touch. Next, include standard detail information such as the baby’s full name, day of birth, length, and weight. Additional information could include the place of birth (city, state, or hospital name), parent’s name, and sibling name’s. If you decide to mail birth announcements after the birth of the baby, include a photograph of the newborn.
