Zoloft Ultram Interaction

There are many circumstances when a patient must take more than one
prescription medication at the same time. There are certain
complications involved whenever multiple medications are taken and it
is imperative to keep your prescribing physician advised of all
medications you are taking, whether they are prescription or
nonprescription remedies.

One
such complication to be particularly mindful of is the Zoloft Ultram
interaction on the central nervous system. Both these drugs are highly
effective in treating specific disorders but, together, they require
close medical supervision.

Zoloft (sertraline) is a selective
serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), a class of drugs used in the
treatment of mental distress disorders including depression, panic and
anxiety disorders, posttraumatic stress syndrome, premenstrual
dysphoric disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Ultram
is a narcotic analgesic made from a synthetic opioid similar to
codeine. It is used for long-term treatment of prolonged, chronic pain
that falls in the moderate to moderately severe range of discomfort.

Because
both drugs derive their relief from working with brain chemicals, the
Zoloft Ultram interaction can be dramatic and frightening. Patients
taking Ultram in conjunction with any SSRI, including Zoloft, are at
elevated risk to seizure and convulsive episodes.

The Zoloft
Ultram interaction increases the risk of developing any of the side
effects associated with Ultram. Zoloft taken alone can produce any
number of side effects, both mild and severe, and the combination of
drugs may have an unpredictable interaction in any given individual.

When
considering a prescription for either of these medications, be sure to
let your prescribing physician know of any history of head injury or
seizure disorders so as to minimize the risk of adverse or dangerous
Zoloft Ultram interactions.

There is also the increased risk
of addiction to one or both of these drugs when taken over an extended
period of time. It is highly advisable to maintain contact with your
prescribing physician during the course of treatment and withdrawal
from these medications.

Blood levels will need to be
monitored by using laboratory tests to ensure safe and effective levels
of medication are being maintained.
