  • Men’s Health

Mens health differs from womens health in many ways. There are similarities too; the biggest one is that the best thing that can be done to improve mens health is regular visits to the doctor. It is standing joke between husbands and wives that men do not go to the doctor unless it is serious – and even then it might be hard to get him into the doctor’s office.

Why is it so important to mens health to have regular health check-ups? Many of the more serious diseases (such as cancer) can be treated with a higher chance of a full recovery. The catch is the sooner any problem is detected the better. By having a thorough exam and by bringing any and all symptoms or changes to your doctor’s attention mens health can be preserved.

When men go to the doctor, not only is it important to discuss any bodily changes that have occurred in the last year but routine blood work should be ordered too. The information that can be obtained from blood results gives doctors a clearer view of what is going on in mens health. Cholesterol, glucose levels, and other routine tests will be studied.

Just as women are encouraged to create lists of questions to ask to bring to their doctor so should men. By writing down questions or concerns ahead of time and bringing the list to the doctor it is less likely it will be forgotten. Doctors want to do their best to improve mens health but they need the full-picture to do their job properly. Even if the annual appointment is a couple of weeks away right everything down and bring the list with you. A regular doctor visit once a year and throughout the year as needed is crucial to maintaining mens health.

  • Mental Health

Anorexia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and Bulimia Nervosa are all forms of eating disorders. Mental health is involved because the self-image a man or woman has of themselves when they have an eating disorder is skewed and unhealthy. A woman with one of the three types of eating disorders (or a combination of two of more of them) is suffering from poor mental health and needs help to overcome her problem.

A person with Anorexia Nervosa is in essence starving themselves. They believe they are fat when they are not and will not eat to keep themselves healthy. Some of the mental health concerns that are exhibited in patients with this disease are acting moody or very depressed a desire to be alone and not socialize, and not eating in front of others. With treatment a patient can return to a healthy body weight, and return to a state of better mental health with counseling.

Binge Eating Disorder is another food disorder that is linked with the state of a patient’s mental health. A person who has this disorder (it is more common in women than men) will eat and then continue eating past the point of being full. A person with this disorder will need medical treatment to recover physically and counseling to achieve a positive mental health perspective.

Bulimia Nervosa again is a physical and mental health condition. Much like Binge Eating Disorder, the patient will consume more food than is necessary until they are way too full. The difference with Bulimia Nervosa is that the person with the disease will purge the food they have consume to try and control their calorie intake (either by vomiting or taking laxatives).

Eating disorders are serious and need professional help both for a person’s mental health as well as their physical being.

  • Women’s Health

Being active and exercising is extremely beneficial to women’s health. There are many returns you can derive from physical activity from better sleep to helping control your weight – two very important factors in maintaining women’s health. Physical exercise of one kind or another is recommended every day for a minimum duration of 20-30 minutes. This does not mean you have to go and run on a treadmill though. As long as you are getting your heart rate up regular chores such as vacuuming and gardening can be used to fill you daily quota of exercise.

Blood pressure, stress, heart disease, strokes, and diabetes are all women’s health conditions that can be lowered by practicing daily activities. In addition to these physical benefits, exercise can help lower any stress you may be under and help you sleep better. Some women find that if they work out too close to bedtime that they have a harder time going to sleep. If this is the case try working out first thing in the morning, by doing this you will boost your metabolism for the rest of the day too. And having a faster metabolism will help women’s health by keeping weight down as long as the right foods are consume.

To ensure that adding physical activity or exercise to a daily routine, a doctor should be consulted to ensure that there are no concerns in the women’s health that should be taken into consideration. Some of these concerns could include if you are pregnant, have an injury or have just recently recovered from an injury, and if you are obese. A woman who is over the age of 50 or who has diabetes should also consult with a health care professional. Activity is still recommended despite these conditions but a doctor will most likely have some limitations and precautions to follow for optimal women’s health.

  • There is a new way of thinking about nutrition and diet and the link to womens health. No longer is the focus just on losing weight and looking great but there is a goal of being healthy above all else. Womens health can mean so many things but a good base for getting and remaining healthy depends on what you feed your body.

Adding fiber to diets is an effective way to boost womens health. This can be done by choosing whole grain pastas, breads, and cereals. Although fiber is a carbohydrate with no nutritional value on its own the other benefits it provides are invaluable. In addition to keeping a women’s gastrointestinal tract healthy, fiber improves womens health by lowering cholesterol and lowering the chances of her getting heart disease.

Eating more often is another piece of advice to follow when making a plan to increase womens health. This doesn’t mean to eat more, just break up the amount of food you would eat in a day into smaller more frequent meals. This will help a woman avoid over eating and boost her metabolism by feeding her body smaller amounts and frequent intervals. Of course, the food that is chosen is a big factor in the health benefits you will derive from eating whether they are small or large meals.

Water and womens health are closely linked. Drinking water can improve a women’s complexion, flush out toxins from her body and improve the functioning of other body organs. Many times a thirst for water is confused for hunger. To ensure women are not eating too much and are staying hydrated they should drink at least 8 glass of water everyday for optimal womens health. Fruit juices should be limited and do not count towards the 8 glasses of water.

    Incontinence

Approximately 13 million American women suffer from incontinence, or loss of bladder control.  Pregnancy and childbirth distress the bladder and other conditions, such as aging muscles, infection, and irritation, can cause incontinence, too.  Aging, infection, and irritation can also lead to incontinence in men.

Surgery and medication can relieve symptoms but a recent study, called the Program to Reduce Incontinence by Diet and Exercise (PRIDE), proved it’s possible to relieve symptoms by simply losing weight.

The PRIDE study enlisted 338 women, all overweight or clinically obese, and who experienced 10 or more episodes of incontinence in a typical week.  One-half of them spent six months in an intensive weight-loss program involving behavior modification, diet, and exercise.  The second group received only information describing the benefits of weight loss and exercise.

In six months, the women in the weight-loss program had lost 17 pounds on average, or 8% of their original weight.  They’d also reduced the number of incontinence episodes by 47%.

The group getting only literature lost just 3 pounds on average, or 1.6% of body weight, and reduced their incontinence events by only 28%.

    Jaundice

Some diseases and medical conditions affect the way the body processes the parts of a cell after it’s died.  When this cellular breakdown results in a concentrated amount of the pigment, bilirubin, jaundice occurs.

Most people associate jaundice with a yellowed look to the skin and yellowing in the whites of the eyes.  It’s this reaction that gives the medical condition its name.  Jaune is the French word for yellow.

Jaundice is closely associated with the health of one’s liver and alcoholics frequently experience jaundice when cirrhosis is diagnosed.  Hepatitis, malaria, sickle cell anemia, and kidney diseases, among others, also cause jaundice.

Newborn babies often develop neonatal jaundice, which often appears on day 2 after birth and subsides naturally around day 8.  Premature babies may experience this form of jaundice for as long as two weeks.

While almost always harmless, neonatal jaundice is linked to hearing loss.  All babies born in the United States get a bilirubin test at birth.

    Kaposi’s Sarcoma

Hungarian dermatologist Moritz Kaposi first identified this form of viral cancer in 1872 while working at the University of Vienna.  The human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) causes Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS), a form of skin cancer, although the link between the virus and the cancer was not proven until 1994.

While HHV-8 causes all forms of Kaposi’s sarcoma, it affects various peoples in various ways.  Elderly men of Eastern European descent are prone to KS, especially those from the Mediterranean basin area, and young people in sub-Saharan Africa are prone to KS, especially on their lower limbs.  About 50% of the sub-Saharan population is thought to be infected with HHV-8.

Transplant-related Kaposi’s sarcoma affects organ transplant patients, too.  In some cases, an organ harboring HHV-8 is transplanted or the transplant recipient has already been exposed to the virus but the surgery releases it from dormancy.

The KS rate in AIDS patients is so high it’s become a diagnostic measure to determine when an HIV-positive patient is said to have developed AIDS.  The KS rate among AIDS patients is 300 times higher than in transplant patients.

    Lung Cancer

While it’s common knowledge that cigarette smoking causes more cases of lung cancer than any other factor, most people are surprised to learn that the #2 leading cause of lung cancer comes from the ground.

When certain elements of the soil – rock, water, and naturally occurring uranium – decompose, they form the gas, radon, which can seep into a home through leaks and cracks.  Damp, drafty basements, because they are situated all or partially under ground, can be especially risky.

Radon exposure is thought to be responsible for as many as 21,000 lung cancer deaths in the United States each year.  The cancer risk increases when a smoker also experiences radon exposure but as many as 2,900 people who’ve never smoked cigarettes die each year from lung cancer thought to be triggered by radon exposure.

Many hardware stores and most county public health agencies carry radon-testing kits that range in price from about $5 to $15.  The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Surgeon General’s Office recommend testing for radon in the room most often used for family activities to get the most relevant reading.

There is no readily discernable evidence of radon’s presence so testing is vital.  In a 2007 test of homes in Madison, Wisconsin, two-thirds of them tested positive for radon at concentrations exceeding safe levels.  There is no way to prevent the formation of radon but homes can be made more secure when leaks, holes, sumps, cracks, and other openings in a basement are sealed effectively.

The EPA has designated January as National Radon Action Month.

  • Female Health

The biggest benefit to women and female health when they quit smoking is a decreased chance of being diagnosed with lung cancer. But there are more benefits such as less chance of having a heart attack or stroke and the chances of getting osteoporosis are reduced. Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things to do, it is an addiction. But once it is beaten there is an immediate improvement to female health.

Many female health problems have been linked to smoking. A woman doesn’t have to be a smoker to develop the conditions or diseases associated with smoking. Another way female health is compromised is by being exposed to second-hand smoke on a regular basis. If there is a smoker in the family or household, they should not smoke around others and never inside the house. For the benefit of all of the members of the household and to improve both male and female health smoking should be done outdoors.

If a woman wants to have a baby and she smokes the smoking can reduce the chances of conceiving. Female health is of the utmost importance in pregnancy. If a woman quits smoking not only will the odds of getting pregnant increase but the health of the baby will be better too. Some women decide to quit smoking while they are pregnant and then find that they have quit for good by the time the baby is born.

Female health problems that can be reduced by quitting smoking is less illnesses too. It has been found that smokers take more sick days from work than non-smokers. By quitting smoking, your body will be better able to ward off and fight off germs that cause women to become sick. Best of all, when a woman quits smoking she can increase her life expectancy having more time with her family and loved ones.

  • Florida Health Solution

The state of Florida has developed and released a program that is meant to act as a Florida health solution for children less than 19 years of age and for children that are uninsured. There are four parts to the program and once you apply the administrators will review your application and put your application through to the correct facet of the program. In order to be eligible for this program the parents or legal guardian (including grandparents) of the child has to be a resident of the state of Florida

This Florida health solution is meant to provide better medical coverage and services to uninsured children. No child should have to go without needed medical care if they are not insured. If your child meets all of the eligibility requirements there is no cost compared to some other insurance plans that have monthly premiums.

There are other non-profit organizations that provide a Florida health solution to children in need. Some of these plans are focused on children with special needs to help ease the cost of high medical bills that these children’s parents could be faced with (with our without insurance). In addition to insurance availability as a health solution for children there are still more organizations that conduct research. Their mission is to find a better way to treat childhood illnesses or even better, cure them. The goal for these types of organizations, just like the parents is to make our children as healthy as possible.

No child should go without health care because of availability or cost. The Florida health solution for children provides a way that no child has to go without either health insurance to eligible families or for a small monthly premium. If you are not a United States citizen but have been residing in Florida for a minimum of five year you still may qualify for one of the programs.

  • Health Care

As a parent it is your job to not only you ensure the health care that your children receive is top-notch, you need to take care of yourself and your partner too. Health care is a family concern because if one member gets sick it affects the entire family. A consistent schedule of annual check-ups and prompt doctors visits when there is an illness or concern are called for. Children need the best health care that can be provided. This does not always come in the form of a pediatrician; most family doctors are more than capable of providing health care services to an entire family. You may consider seeing a pediatrician if your child or children has a medical condition of special concern such as severe food allergies or a behavior disorder such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

When a baby is born they will see the doctor at least every six months for a check-up and immunizations. Once the baby is 18 months though there isn’t another recommended check-up until the child reaches kindergarten age. Talk to your doctor and find out what their thoughts are on bringing your child in for an annual check-up anyway. As a parent you will bring your child in for any health care concern as it comes up but it makes sense to go in to have your child’s growth and overall health looked at.

As an adult your health care is important too. But as an adult who is also a parent your responsibility to stay healthy is bigger than just you. Ensure that you book your own annual examination with your family doctor. If there have been any recent changes in your body or mental state, be sure to contact your doctor right away. The sooner screening and detection takes place for a wide variety of diseases the better your chances of treatment and survival.
