  • Health Insurance In California

Health insurance in California has some unique features with
long-term results, which enable the residents of California to stay
fit, and healthy. The California state law requires health insurance
companies to include certain provisions including “guaranteed
    renewable” provision.

    Guaranteed Renewable Provision

    The
“guaranteed renewable” provision ensure that the insurance company
cannot stop or cancel the contract with the insurer and the insurance
company has to renew the policy on request from the insurer provided
that the insurer has not given any false statements or information on
his original application and has not failed in paying premium timely.

    Significance of Provision

    The
provision is important in two respects – Firstly, the provision does
not prohibit the insurance company from hiking the premium or refusing
any form of coverage. However, if you have insurance policy you do not
have to worry about its renewal, as the insurance company has to give
you the option of renewal. Secondly, the pre-existing condition of the
body does not come as an obstacle in the way of procuring health
    insurance

Through the introduction of such provisions,
California State hopes to see that all its residents have health
insurance irrespective of their income. Though, most of California
residents have health insurance, there is still 20% who do not have or
yet to have any kind of insurance.

    By opting for Health
Insurances, you may feel that you are wasting your money by investing
for the benefits that you might require in the future. Think twice, the
California health insurance policies not only covers your medical
expenses but it also helps you to bring back your life on normal track,
which has been affected by your physical ailment. Its better to have
California health insurance plan at an early stage because you don’t
know at what part of life, your policy may become handy for you.

    As
an insurer, before choosing any policy you need to check out what the
plan covers and moreover whether the plan meets your cost, services and
quality standards. Selecting the appropriate policy is pivotal for
reaping the desired benefits. Insurance companies take into account the
lifestyle of a person before pricing and formulating heath insurance
plans in California. For instance if an individual is a smoker, the
insurance company will charge premiums comparatively higher than normal
    cases.

Factors like health conditions, age, marital status
and family size constitute an important part in the price of an
insurance plan. Employers generally provide the most appropriate and
outstanding group insurance plans. However, if the business is of tiny
scale, then don’t expect employers to provide health insurance policy.

    Different Types of Policies

    No
matter whatever plan you choose, it must meet your requirements and has
the reputation of offering quality services. Basically health insurance
in California can be divided into five parts.

    Indemnity
Policy: Indemnity policy is governed by California Department of
Insurance (CDI) and gives an individual a liberty to select health care
unit or doctor, required for his treatment.

    Preferred
Provider Organization (PPO): Preferred Provider Organization is the
next kind of health insurance in California, which actually allows you
to pay less if you choose health care facility or doctor within the PPO
network and is regulated by either the California Department of
Insurance (CDI) or the Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC).

    Health
Maintenance Organization (HMO): HMO allows you to choose doctors or
health care facilities that come under HMO and is regulated by the
Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC)

    Self-Insured Health
Plan: Business houses and big organizations prefer self-insured plans,
which are monitored by Employee Retirement Income Security Act,
(ERISA). Here, huge amount of money is kept as a reserve to meet the
    medical expenses of the policyholders.

    Multiple Employer
Welfare Arrangement: Employers, associate of organization like
industry, trade and others make account in order to reimburse medical
expenses, which is controlled by the California Department of Insurance
    (CDI)

With so many options, you can choose any health
insurance in California that understands your requirements of giving
you protection coverage and peace of mind.

  • Blood Pressure Test

    CONTROL YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE
DRUG DREE in 3 Weeks or Less

Blood pressure can be convicted as a serial killer, and, therefore, it is imperative to go for a blood pressure test at regular intervals. It is always an excellent idea to visit the doctor, even if checking your blood pressure is the only reason. Prior to going for a blood pressure test, it is important to realize what causes blood pressure. Doctors can render you an elaborative idea about the silent killer.

How Blood Pressure Test Is Done?

Blood pressure is measured by using a device that has a meter attached to a cuff (which is wrapped round the upper arm). There is also a small rubber bulb to inflate the cuff. As the cuff is inflated by squeezing the rubber bulb, blood flow is stopped momentarily. As soon as the cuff begins to deflate, blood forces into the arteries with a whooshing sound. Blood pressure reading taken at this point of time when flow of blood is resumed is known as the ‘Systolic pressure’. At this point, the blood pressure is at its peak. BP reading on the meter gauge, when the blood flow is no longer heard, is read as ‘Diastolic pressure’. At this point, the blood pressure is at its lowest. The blood pressure reading is presented in the order of Systolic/Diastolic mmHG and the normal blood pressure reads 120/80 mmHG.

    Types of Blood Pressure Monitors

Blood pressure monitors are of two types – ‘Manual Blood Pressure Monitors’ and ‘Automatic Blood Pressure Monitors’. Manual monitors, better known as ‘Sphygmomanometers’, have an arm cuff attached to a squeeze bulb; there is even a stethoscope or microphone and gauge to show the blood pressure reading. The latter are easy to operate. The device has a monitor and cuff attached to it. You need only to wrap the cuff round your arm and the machine automatically does the rest of the job to the point of taking the reading.

Go For Blood Pressure Test At Timely Intervals

Unhealthy lifestyle, pressure, stress and tension can be pinned down for blood pressure problems. Hypertension can be the prime reason for high blood pressure, which can result in severe heart attack or stroke, eventually taking ones life. Hence, it becomes imperative for those above 30 years of age to go for blood pressure test. Periodic check ups help you to be aware of your present condition and avoid health problems. To ensure a systematic check up, you can straight away bring a blood pressure monitor to your home.

  • Blood Pressure Reading

    CONTROL YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE
DRUG DREE in 3 Weeks or Less

Blood pressure reading is important for your health. To get the right reading, you should visit a doctor and make sure that the blood pressure monitor is giving the right reading. Mistakes in reading can bring negative effects on you health.

How To Take Blood Pressure Reading?

Blood pressure reading is represented in numbers and the normal BP reads 120/80 mmHG. The numbers are measured by a blood pressure device, which measures the pressure that blood exerts on the artery walls. When the heart beats, it pumps blood into the arteries and forces the blood against the walls. This is known as ‘systolic’ pressure. In between two beats, blood pressure against the artery-wall lowers and this low BP is known as ‘Diastolic’ pressure.

A person with high blood pressure is prone to having heart attacks, stroke and other heart damages. Remember that blood pressure reading is not stable and depends upon your mental and physical condition. Stress, tension, hypertension, emotional distress, age and even obesity can cause blood pressure changes.

Nonetheless, to ensure correct blood pressure reading, it is important that the arm cuff firmly fits round the upper arm. It is, therefore, advisable to properly measure the upper arm and place order for the same size cuff from the market.

A Few Things You Should Follow To Ensure Accurate Reading

Your arm should be supported at the heart level.
You should measure your upper arm with great care so that you have the right-size cuff.
Make sure that the cuff is inflated quickly and deflated slowly.
The systolic blood pressure can be taken by placing the stethoscope on the wrist.
Avoid wearing any arm accessory when the cuff is tied round your arm.
If you have blood pressure equipment at home, then try to use the standardized measurement method.
Have your blood pressure checked at least thrice a day; this way, you will have the correct reading.

In case your blood pressure reading is very high, then you should get a thorough medical check up done by a medical professional. In order to get the right medical treatment for your condition, it is imperative that you discuss your case history with your doctor.

  • Medical Care

The term medical care refers to the prevention, treatment and
management of several ailments as an attempt to preserve psychological
and physiological well-being. Medical nurses and health professionals
who offer valuable services to the patients shoulder this whole
    procedure.

In the words of WHO or World Health
Organization, medical care concerns all goods and services formulated
for the purpose of promoting a sound healthy condition which includes
“preventive, curative and palliative interventions, whether directed to
    individuals or to populations”.

    Previously the term “health
care” was basically used for medicines required for the proper
treatment and prevention of several diseases.

    The health
care or medical care industry is growing fast with the progress of time
and civilization. The yearly turn over of the industry is impressive
enough to constitute a major part of the country’s economy.

    The
industry depends on the transferal of essential health services by
providers of health care. However, for the services offered by the
organizations payments are being made either by the patient or the
patient’s insurance company. Such organizations also receive
governmental aids or economical assistance provided by charities or
volunteers specifically in third world countries.

    In
contemporary times medical care or health care is offered in several
ways. The most common method of dealing is a face-to-face interaction
between the patient and health care provider. This is generally what
happens in the field of medicine in several growing and developing
    countries.

However, with the introduction of modern
telecommunications technology the communication between the provider
and the receiver has become more easy and convenient. In such cases
communication takes place over the telephone and through video
conferencing, the Internet, e-mail, text messages and several other
    modes of communication.

    There is immense improvement in
health care system due to advancements of medical science. However, for
a suitable medical care a proper diagnosis and treatment of the
    condition is essential.

From a social point of view a
significant portion of the population can become healthier through
changes made in society and individual life styles. In this way, down
the years health care and supervision has enhanced the life of an
individual and has rightly taught him the lesson of healthy living.
Therefore, stay fit and live healthy with apposite medical care and
    attention.

  • Medical Alert

Medical alert jewelry is a piece of jewelry worn by someone with an
existing medical condition. The jewelry is usually a necklace or
bracelet that contains some pertinent medical information about you.
It may also contain a telephone number of someone else who knows your
medical history or even any prescription drugs you are taking.  This
type of medical alert can help save your life.

    For example,
if someone is diabetic and goes into a diabetic coma, they cannot tell
the EMS personnel anything about their medical history.  Maybe they
were taking insulin and took too much.  Or maybe their blood sugar
dropped too low, causing them to go into the coma.  If you are wearing
a piece of medical alert jewelry that tells the EMS personnel that you
are diabetic, it can save valuable diagnostic time.   Rather than
checking out different things to see what is wrong, the medical
personnel will immediately know where to begin.

    The medical
alert jewelry is great for anyone who suffers from diabetes,
anaphylactic allergies, adrenal insufficiency, chronic illness or
anyone taking blood thinners or someone who has a pacemaker
installed.   This type of medical alert can also be helpful to law
enforcement personnel.  If you are acting erratic in public or while
driving, it may be due to a medical condition.  Having this piece of
jewelry or card will let them know that you are not drunk or high on
drugs, but suffering from a true medical emergency.

    If you do
not like wearing jewelry, many of the manufacturers of these medical
alerts also offer cards you can keep in your wallet or purse.  Many
companies make these medical alerts, but MedicAlert is probably the
best known.  There is a new type of medical alert on the market.  This
is a USB tag that contains all your medical and emergency information
such as prescriptions, existing conditions, doctor’s name and contact
number, etc.  The leading distributor of the new USB tags is MedicTag.

  • Medical

Being a doctor is a great and rewarding career, but if you want to
go to medical school, you will need to prepare.  Although there are 125
medical schools in the United States, it is still very tough to get
into medical school.  You will need to make sure you have done
everything you can to compete with all the others hoping to enter.

    Most
people apply to medical school at the end of their junior year in
college.  However, some finish college and work for a few years before
starting their medical education.  The American Medical College
Application Service (AMCAS) has made it easier to apply to medical
school.  You fill out an application with them and send them your
transcripts.  AMCAS then sends your information to the schools you have
    chosen.

Visit the premedical advisor for your college or
university for help with the medical school application process.  What
are the medical schools looking for to determine if they will offer you
acceptance?  They will check your college grades, extracurricular
activities (such as volunteering at a local hospital), and personal
characteristics.  The medical schools will want to check that you have
complete all the mandatory undergraduate courses, have an exceptional
grade point average, finished the MCAT (Medical College Admission
Test), and done some type of voluntary public or health related
service.  The medical school admissions staff will also look closely at
letters of recommendations you have from physicians, community leaders,
and faculty members of the undergraduate college you attended.

    If
you are among the applications narrowed down by the medical school
admissions committee, you will then be called for an interview.
Getting into medical school is going to be tough, but if you start
preparing ahead of time and make sure you meet or exceed all the
    requirements, you should do well.

  • Electronic Medical Records

While research in medicine keeps improving people’s health and
lives, the means with which patient records is kept also is
progressing.  Whereas patient information was once kept in paper form,
many healthcare facilities have switched to electronic medical
records.  Electronic medical records are patient records that are kept
in digital format.  Just like the paper records, the electronic medical
records can contain patient demographics, medical history, immunization
status, laboratory and testing information, prescription information,
appointment scheduling, claims and payment information, and patient
    reminders.

While it would seem the patient records in
digital format would be easier to access and backup, only about 10% of
American hospitals have adopted the electronic medical records format.
President Bush created the Office of National Coordinator for Health
Information Technology (ONC) in 2004.  This office set up Regional
Health Information Organizations (RHIOs) in many states to help promote
the sharing of health information and Congress is working on increasing
funding.  The National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom is
very interested in getting their paper patient records converted over
to electronic medical records.  By 2010, they hope to have 60,000,000
patients transferred to electronic medical records.

    Why are some
physicians and hospitals concerned about switching over to a system
that seems to be more convenient and easier to use?  Some are concerned
about the confidentiality of patient records that are maintained on an
electronic system.  When patient records are put on a computer, there
is fear that someone on the Internet who is unauthorized to view them
might be able to access those records.  Other hospitals are hesitant to
move to an electronic medical records system because they do not have
the technology or it is not readily available.  The hospital would need
software, hardware, and networking technologies to be able to share the
electronic medical records and many are just not willing to spend the
money when the paper system of patient records seems to work fine.

  • Temporary Health Insurance

Temporary health insurance plans are great for certain situations.
It is normally used to fill a gap while you are waiting to get long
term coverage from another source. For example, if you are between
jobs, you may temporarily need coverage, but only on a short term basis
    – until you find a new job that offers health insurance coverage. If
you recently graduated from college, you may need a temporary health
insurance plan while you are looking for a job. Sometimes, employers
are in the process of getting medical insurance set up. In this case,
you want temporary health insurance to cover you until your employer
provided insurance kicks in. If you are a seasonal or temporary worker,
temporary insurance can come in handy. And finally, if you are
traveling outside the United States briefly, you may want to look at
getting temporarily health insurance if your normal health care
coverage does not apply outside the United States. If you already have
a health insurance provider, check with them first to see if they will
cover any medical expenses incurred outside the country.

    Temporary
health insurance plans can run anywhere from 30 days to 180 days. You
may be able to spread out the premiums out into monthly payments or
some companies may allow you to pay for the entire period in one single
    payment.

Unfortunately, some individuals may not be eligible
for temporary health insurance. Those who have not resided in the
United States for more than 12 months may find it hard to get temporary
health insurance. You may also have trouble getting such a plan if you
have been denied an individual health insurance plan in the past, for
whatever reasons. People who are 65 and eligible for Medicare may be
turned down when applying for temporary health insurance as might
someone who is pregnant when they apply.

  • Supplemental Health Insurance

Many people who have health insurance may not have enough to cover
their entire medical costs. A supplemental health insurance plan can
cover the costs not normally covered by their primary health insurance
plan. Some plans may not fully cover hospital coverage, but if you
purchase supplemental health insurance, you do not have to worry about
making any out of pocket payments. In some cases, those who are
planning to travel outside the United States can benefit from
supplemental health insurance because your own domestic health
insurance plan may not extend its coverage to overseas. If you are a
member of a HMO plan at work, but that does not cover your visits to a
doctor that are not in their network of providers, a supplemental plan
can keep you from paying for your doctor visits. Some health insurance
plans cover visited a primary care physician, but they don’t cover
dental or optical insurance. These are just as important to your health
as anything else, so you may want to consider purchasing a supplemental
health insurance plan for these two areas. That will pay for your
dental visits as well as your visits to the optometrist and some even
pay for your eyeglasses or contact lens.

    The elderly who have
Medicare too find that it often does not cover their entire medical
cost. Often being on a fixed income means that they do not have extra
money to pay out of pocket medical expenses. There are 12 standardized
Medicare supplemental health insurance plans. These plans offer
different combinations of benefits. Medicare doesn’t pay for long-term
care services, private duty nursing care, most dental care, health care
received outside the United States, routine foot care, and routine eye
care or hearing aids. Because of this, it is good for elderly people to
have some type of supplemental health insurance that will pay for these
types of services for which Medicare will not pay.

  • Student Health Insurance

If you are the parent of a college student who is no longer covered
under your insurance plan, you may wonder if they need student health
insurance. After all, we usually think of people in their late teens
and early 20’s as being very healthy. But, what if your child is in an
accident, is diagnosed with a disease or he or she contracts a
debilitating illness? Any one of these situations could ruin your
family financially, so why take a chance with your family finances.

    Most
college students who are enrolled in college for at least nine credit
hours are eligible to apply for student health insurance. There are
plans for those enrolled in both undergraduate and graduate school.
Usually, plans will require that the student attend an accredited
college or university. In some cases, the college itself may provide
student health insurance as either a part of the tuition or something
supplemental for which a student may apply if needed. This may be a
group insurance plan, where the school or an organization within the
school offers health or travel insurance to the students. Because it is
a group plan, it is usually more affordable than traditional insurance
plans and you will not need to take a physical or fill out a health
    questionnaire.

Other types of plans available include
short-term medical insurance for students who are studying in the
United States for up to a year, international student health plans for
both non-US and US citizens, and travel insurance for students who are
only traveling outside the US for a brief period of time.

    When
you start looking at plans for your college age child, be sure to read
all that is available with the plan. Some may offer only
hospitalization while some will also offer doctor visits. Some may or
may not include dental and vision visits. If you want those included in
the student health insurance plan, you may find your premiums (the
monthly amount you pay) is higher.
