  • Child Birth

There is plenty of information and tips available on child birth. The birth of a child is a joyous time for parents. Even if you have gone through several births, each one is different. For example, some women experience very little pain with their first child, and then experience great pain with their subsequent births.

Regardless of the level of pain, it is important for expecting mothers to educate themselves on the labor and birth. The more information you learn about the child birth, the better. This way, you know what to expect, and how to respond to different situations. Unfortunately, some women think that child birth will be a breeze and do not educate themselves. Physicians typically recommend certain birth classes, and may provide their patient with reading materials. Expecting mothers who take advantage of these resources approach the labor with ease and confidence. Other mothers can also provide insightful information to new mothers. For the most part, pregnant women focus a lot of their attention on body and mood changes, while some mothers panic and worry excessively about how their life is going change. Those who approach labor and delivery blindly may have a horrible experience.

Child birth tips include scheduling an appointment with your OB hospital and nurses. A hospital tour lets you see the delivery room and meet some of the staff. This can ease nervousness because you become familiar with the surrounding prior to the birth. Additionally, child birth tips include information on how to clean up amniotic stains. Expecting mothers might also research tips on how to change their position during labor, recognizing pre-labor signs, and deciding whether to choose a home birth. Each birth is different, and you can never be fully prepared for the labor. However, familiarizing yourself with a chosen method (vaginal, C-section, home birth, natural birth, etc) is a great way to enter the delivery with ease.

  • Brain Cancer

There are two types of brain cancer, the first one being in the form of a primary brain tumor, and the second one comes in the form of a metastatic brain tumor. A primary brain tumor is a tumor that originates in the brain and may or may not be malignant. The metastatic brain tumor will always be malignant because it is caused from cancer cells invading the brain from other parts of the body. Both are dangerous and life threatening, but metastatic brain tumors are more of a threat because the disease has advanced so far and has already spread throughout the body.

Some of the warning signs, such as headaches and drowsiness, may be ignored because for some people they may be a normal occurrence. However, there are more telltale symptoms that everyone should be aware of. Although the symptoms of brain cancer may differ depending on which part of the brain contains the tumor, there are some symptoms that are usually present no matter where the tumor is located. These symptoms include impaired functions, such as impaired speech, impaired judgment, impaired sense of smell and impaired coordination just to name a few. Seizures and vision loss are also very common symptoms of brain cancer and should be taken into consideration when making a diagnosis.

There are a few forms of treatment for brain cancer, and an oncologist will decide which one is best for each individual case. The first type of treatment is surgical removal of the tumor. This treatment is very invasive, but very effective when combined with radiation. Radiation is the other form of treatment, and it is often used by itself when surgery isn’t the best option for the patient. The radiation damages the genetic material in the cancerous cells, prohibiting further growth. Cancerous cells aren’t able to repair themselves like normal cells can, so the radiation causes the cancerous cells to die. It is important that treatment is started as soon as possible in order to achieve the maximum benefits of that treatment.

  • Bladder Cancer

Bladder Cancer:    This type of cancer can develop on the surface of the bladder wall as benign or malignant papillomas or grow within the bladder wall to quickly invade underlying muscles.  Usually almost all bladder tumors arise form the result from malignant transformation of benign papillomas.  The less common bladder tumors include adenocarcinomas, epidermoid carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, sarcomas, tumors in bladder diverticula, and carcinomas in situ.

Bladder tumors usually affect people over age 50 and are 4 times more common in men than in women.

Cause: True cause of bladder cancer is unknown. Risk factors include exposure to environmental carcinogens such as, tobacco, nitrates, benzidine to name a few (which are known to predispose to transitional cell tumors). People who works in certain industrial groups such as, aniline dye workers, spray painters, hairdressers, petroleum workers are at high risk for developing these tumors.

Bladder cancer is also associated with chronic bladder irritation and infection in people with kidney stones, and in dwelling catheters.

    Symptoms:

During early stage of bladder cancer the patient may be asymptomatic.

Patient may experience gross, painless, intermittent hematuria (often with clots in the urine)

Suprapubic pain after voiding occurs in patients with invasive lesions.

    Bladder irritability

    Urinary frequency

    Nocturia and dribbling.

    Treatment:

If tumor has not invaded the muscle:  transurethral (cystoscopic) resection and fulguration (electrical destruction) remove superficial bladder tumors.  However, if additional tumors develop, fulguration may have to be repeated every 3 months for years.

Tumors too large to be treated through a cystoscope require segmental bladder resection to remove a full thickness section of the bladder.  This procedure can only be done if  the tumor is not near the bladder neck or Urethral orifices.

Bladder instillations of thiotepa or other chemotherapeutic agents after transurethral resections may also help control such tumors.

In the medical field they are administrating immunologic agent into the bladder but it is experimental.

Radical cystectomy:  for infiltrating bladder tumor.  The week before cystectomy, treatment may include 2,000 rads of external beam therapy to the bladder.  The surgeon may perform a urinary diversion, usually an ileal conduit, which requires the patient to wear an external pouch continuously.  (other diversions include ureterostomy, nephrostomy, vesicostmy, ileal bladder, ileal loop, and sigmoid conduit.)

Radical cystectomy and urethrectomy cause impotence in males, because such resection damages the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves that control erection and ejaculation.  At a later date, the patient may desire a penile implant, to make sexual intercourse (without ejaculation) possible.

For advanced bladder cancer – treatment includes cystectomy to remove the tumor, radiation therapy, and systemic chemotherapy.

  • Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer: This disorder ranks second only to lung cancer as the leading cause of cancer death in women ages 35 to 54.  It also occur in men though very rare.  With the advance treatment and care for breast cancer, the 5 year survival rate for localized  breast cancer has improved from 78% in 1940 to 90% today; if the cancer has spread, the rate is 60%.

Cause:  The exact cause of breast cancer in unknown.  Risk factors include a family history of breast cancer, early onset of menses or late onset of menopause, endometrial or ovarian cancer, long menstrual cycles, and first pregnancy after age 35.

Other predisposing factors includes, radiation, estrogen therapy, diet, stress or unusual disturbances in home or work life, hair dyes, and fibrocystic disease of the breast.

    Symptoms:

    Positive Self Examination

Lump or mass in the breast ( a hard, stony mass is usually malignant)

Change in breast symmetry or size

Change in breast skin such as thickening, dimpling, edema, or ulceration.

Change in nipples, such as itching, burning, erosion, or retraction

Change in temperature – warm, hot, or pink area

Discharge of any kind (produce by breast manipulation such as greenish black, white, creamy, serous, or bloody) – non-lactating woman

Pain (but does not necessary mean breast cancer)

    Pathologic bone fractures, hypercalcemia.

    Treatment:

Breast cancer treatment are controversial;  therapy should consider the stage of the disease the woman’s age, and menopausal status, and the disfiguring effects of the surgery.

Surgery:  Lumpectomy (excision of the tumor)  Irradiation is often combined with this surgery.  Lumpectomy also provides biopsy material to determine tumor cell type. (usually done as an outpatient basis)

In a two stage procedure, the surgeon removes the lump and confirms malignancy.  The surgeon will discuss treatment options with the patients.

In lumpectomy and dissection of the axillary lymph nodes, the tumor and the axillary lymph nodes are removed, leaving the breast intact.

simple mastectomy removes the breast but not the lymph nodes or pectoral muscles.

Modified radical mastectomy removes the breast and the axillary lymph nodes.

Radical mastectomy removes the breast, pectoralis major and minor muscles, and the axillary lymph nodes.

Postmastectomy, reconstructive surgery can create a breast mound if the patient desires it and if the patients does not show evidence of advanced disease.

Additional surgery to modify hormone production may include oophorectomy, adrenalectomy, and hypophysectomy (with the last of these two procedure the patients must take daily cortisone supplements for the rest of her life.)

Chemotherapy:  Various cytotoxic drug combinations may be used, either as adjuvant therapy (in patients with axillary lymph node involvement but with no evidence of distant metastasis) or as primary therapy (when metastasis has occurred), depending on a number of factors, including the patient’s premenopausal or postmenopausal status.

Radiation therapy:  Primary radiation therapy after tumor removal is effective for small tumors in early stages with no evidence of distant metastasis.

Other methods used: Estrogen, progesterone, or androgen therapy.
    Anti androgen therapy with aminoglutethimide
Anti estrogen therapy  – Such as Tamoxifen, used in postmenopausal women, most effectively combats estrogen receptor positive tumors.  These newer drug therapies, along with growing evidence that breast cancer is a systemic, not local, disease, has caused a decline in ablative surgery.

  • Florida Health Solution

The state of Florida has developed and released a program that is meant to act as a Florida health solution for children less than 19 years of age and for children that are uninsured. There are four parts to the program and once you apply the administrators will review your application and put your application through to the correct facet of the program. In order to be eligible for this program the parents or legal guardian (including grandparents) of the child has to be a resident of the state of Florida

This Florida health solution is meant to provide better medical coverage and services to uninsured children. No child should have to go without needed medical care if they are not insured. If your child meets all of the eligibility requirements there is no cost compared to some other insurance plans that have monthly premiums.

There are other non-profit organizations that provide a Florida health solution to children in need. Some of these plans are focused on children with special needs to help ease the cost of high medical bills that these children’s parents could be faced with (with our without insurance). In addition to insurance availability as a health solution for children there are still more organizations that conduct research. Their mission is to find a better way to treat childhood illnesses or even better, cure them. The goal for these types of organizations, just like the parents is to make our children as healthy as possible.

No child should go without health care because of availability or cost. The Florida health solution for children provides a way that no child has to go without either health insurance to eligible families or for a small monthly premium. If you are not a United States citizen but have been residing in Florida for a minimum of five year you still may qualify for one of the programs.

  • Female Health

The biggest benefit to women and female health when they quit smoking is a decreased chance of being diagnosed with lung cancer. But there are more benefits such as less chance of having a heart attack or stroke and the chances of getting osteoporosis are reduced. Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things to do, it is an addiction. But once it is beaten there is an immediate improvement to female health.

Many female health problems have been linked to smoking. A woman doesn’t have to be a smoker to develop the conditions or diseases associated with smoking. Another way female health is compromised is by being exposed to second-hand smoke on a regular basis. If there is a smoker in the family or household, they should not smoke around others and never inside the house. For the benefit of all of the members of the household and to improve both male and female health smoking should be done outdoors.

If a woman wants to have a baby and she smokes the smoking can reduce the chances of conceiving. Female health is of the utmost importance in pregnancy. If a woman quits smoking not only will the odds of getting pregnant increase but the health of the baby will be better too. Some women decide to quit smoking while they are pregnant and then find that they have quit for good by the time the baby is born.

Female health problems that can be reduced by quitting smoking is less illnesses too. It has been found that smokers take more sick days from work than non-smokers. By quitting smoking, your body will be better able to ward off and fight off germs that cause women to become sick. Best of all, when a woman quits smoking she can increase her life expectancy having more time with her family and loved ones.

  • Laser Eye Surgery

One of the most remarkable medical technologies developed in recent years is laser eye surgery, or any number of surgical procedures performed on the eye using laser technology.  There are several different types of lasers or techniques that can be used, depending upon physician training and the visual issues that are meant to be corrected.  Laser eye surgery is seen as miraculous by some patients but not every person is a candidate for this type treatment.

The vast majority of patients seeking laser eye surgery are nearsighted, also called shortsighted or myopic.  Surgery works best when myopia (nearsightedness) is mild to moderate.  Severe myopia may be better treated by other means, some surgical but others not.  People experiencing farsightedness (hyperopia) and those with astigmatisms are usually not considered for laser eye surgery but more and more people with these issues are enjoying success with laser surgery, thanks in large part to the continued efforts at improving the technique and adapting it to a wider array of visual problems.

Although ongoing research and development have expanded the number and types of surgical procedures available, laser eye surgery, in general, is basically the same.  During the procedure itself, the laser beam slices through the outermost layer of cornea, leaving just a flap connecting it to the eye.  Once the flap has been created, the surgeon folds it back, out of the way, and uses the laser to reshape the eye’s natural lens underneath.  This reshaping alters the patient’s visual acuity.  To complete the surgery, the flap is returned to its natural position, where the healing process secures it over time.

Other surgical procedures, used before the advent of laser eye surgery, were often painful and took a substantial amount of time for healing and recovery.  One of the most desired aspects of laser surgery is the reduction in pain and the shorter recovery time.

Patient expectation following laser eye surgery is generally rather high but many patients discover complications that leave their vision affected in ways that were nonexistent before surgery.  Some people see halos or ghosting (double vision) and others develop problems with glare and loss of contrast, which makes the vision seem foggy.  Some patients also develop hemorrhages in the eye as a result of surgery and almost one-third of all patients report excessively dry eyes six months after surgery, according to a March 2006 issue of the medical journal, “American Journal of Ophthalmology.’  In some cases, the dry eye issue is permanent, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

It’s these post-surgical complications that led the FDA to issue the following statement regarding laser eye surgery:  “Before undergoing a refractive procedure, you should carefully weigh the risks and benefits based on your own personal value system, and try to avoid being influenced by friends that have had the procedure or doctors encouraging you to do so.”

FDA approval for laser eye surgery limits treatment to only people 18 years old or older.  Before that, eye development hasn’t yet stabilized, making a permanent fix, such as eye surgery, inappropriate and capable of only short-term improvements at best.  To address the changes in vision that naturally occur in everyone, FDA guidelines require a patient’s visual acuity be stable for at least two years before undergoing surgery.

After the age of 50, other means of visual correction may be more appropriate than laser eye surgery.  Regardless of age, only a qualified surgeon can determine which patients are best suited to eye surgery and only after a complete eye exam involving full dilation of the pupils of the eye.

  • LASIK

The familiar term, LASIK, is an acronym for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, which is a form of surgery ophthalmologists perform on patients suffering from a host of visual complaints, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.  This type surgery, using a laser instead of more traditional surgical tools, is called refractive surgery because it alters the shape of the surface of the eye so light, and therefore vision, is processed differently.  Refractive surgery techniques are not limited to the LASIK procedures and lasers are used for other surgical procedures as well.

Most candidates for LASIK surgery have a history of wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses for vision correction and view surgery as a final solution to the daily hassles associated with glasses and contacts.  Studies vary but the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery estimates a 95.4% rate of satisfaction following LASIK surgery.  This success rate, reported in March 2008, involved evaluation of 19 studies involving 2,200 patients and review of more than 3,000 LASIK-related articles published in medical journals during the previous 10-year period.

Nearsightedness, or myopia, is the most common ailment treated via LASIK but, as technologies improve, more and more patients suffering from farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism are undergoing laser surgeries, too.  Best results seem to come from patients who experience only mild to moderate levels of visual distortion.

Individual need determines which variation of LASIK is most appropriate for a given patient but the training and expertise of the surgeon is another consideration, as procedures vary.  In any case, the best outcomes are achieved only after a thorough eye examination that involves full dilation of the pupils and the results evaluated by qualified professionals.  LASIK is not a cosmetic procedure and must never be taken lightly.

As a general rule, surgery involves using a laser to slice off the corneal layer that covers the eye lens, leaving just a flap of tissue holding the flap to the eye.  This flap is then folded back, revealing the surface of the lens underneath.  At this point, the surgeon will guide the laser as it resculpts the natural curvature of the eye lens.  Visual acuity is determined by the curvature of the lens and distance from the retina at the back of the eye.  LASIK optimizes curvature to produce the best vision possible.  Once the eye has been resurfaced, the corneal flap is replaced so the healing process can reattach it firmly and permanently in place.

LASIK works best on young adults who have enjoyed stable vision for at least two years prior to surgery.  A growing number of middle-aged patients, however, are turning to laser surgery to eliminate the need for reading glasses caused by the aging process.  This procedure, called slight monovision, mimics the effect of bifocal glasses.

To achieve monovision, the LASIK surgeon sculpts the patient’s dominant eye to better perceive distance vision while the non-dominant eye is sculpted so visual acuity is similar to the reading glasses the patient has been using.  Post-surgical results require a period of adjustment, just as bifocal lenses do, but most patients report satisfactory results.  Many surgeons fit a perspective monovision patient with contact lenses that replicate post-surgical effects so the patient can spend a few days becoming familiar with the projected outcome before committing to surgery.

While the vast majority of patients declare the surgery a success, satisfaction cannot be guaranteed nor is it 100%.  Some patients become dismayed with blurry vision following surgery but, in many cases, the blurring clears over time.  Because each patient is unique, the healing process varies from person to person.  Some people report clear vision within a week or two but others experience permanent blurring.
