Topamax and Weight

Topamax is an anticonvulsant medication approved for use in 1996 to
treat epilepsy and other disorders that cause seizures and convulsions.
It is also an effective treatment for migraine headaches.

One
of the side effects of Topamax is a markedly decreased appetite. For
this reason, there is a great deal of interest in taking Topamax as a
part of a weight-loss program. Unfortunately, the decreased appetite is
only one of many side effects this drug is known to cause and taking it
for any reason is likely to trigger any and all of the known side
effects and drug interactions associated with this medication.

The
Topamax and weight loss connection has been studied in several clinical
trials but the drug has failed to be approved as a weight loss aid. The
weight reduction was not reliable or predictable enough to meet FDA
standards and the side effects of this very powerful drug were too
harsh for acceptance for this use.

Topamax is a carbonic
anhydrase inhibitor, meaning it alters the nerve impulses in the brain,
thereby controlling nerve impulses that trigger seizures and migraine
headaches. Side effects can be severe and life threatening. It is
imperative to use this drug only as prescribed by a reputable physician.

Taking
Topamax and weight loss programs that involve strenuous exercise can be
very dangerous. Topamax can reduce the body’s ability to perspire,
which could cause the body temperature to rise to dangerous levels.
Anyone taking this drug who also experiences a decrease or absence of
sweating at any time should drink plenty of fluids, stop physical
activities, seek cool shelter, and get immediate emergency medical
attention if body temperature rises above normal or if there are
altered mental states, including mood changes, headache, dizziness, or
disorientation.

Topamax and weight loss programs that involve
a high-protein diet can lead to painful kidney stones, resulting in
permanent kidney damage. Topamax increases the acidity in the blood,
making kidney and liver issues problematic.

There are many
serious side effects associated with Topamax. It should be taken only
as prescribed for seizure and migraine control. There are many safer
ways to achieve effective weight reduction.
